Very nice authentic renaissance medieval Spanish coin. The coin was minted under the reign of Ferdinand II who reigned the kingdom of Aragon from 1452-1516. The coin features a portrait of Ferdinand on the front and a patriarchal cross with on the back. It is about 17.5mm in diameter and weighs 1.89 gram. This coin is from the days when change was made by clipping or cutting coins. Originally it started as a full croat, but was cut to half in antiquity.
Ferdinand is today best known for his role in inaugurating the discovery of the New World, since he and Isabella sponsored the first voyage of Christopher Columbus in 1492. That year he also fought the final war with Granada which expunged the last Islamic state on Iberian soil, thus bringing to a close the centuries-long Reconquista.
Guaranteed authentic from my personal collection. I love feeling the history of these old coins......................
